The National Wildflower Research Center was founded by Lady Bird Johnson and is the only national non-profit organization dedicated to the study, preservation, and reestablishment of North American native plants in planned landscapes. It is located 1 1/2 hours north of San Antonio on the eastern edge of the Edwards Plateau in Austin Texas.

As you enter the Center, you will pass through the Courtyard which demonstrates an attractive formal design typical of building dominated spaces. The gardens of the Seed Court are designed to provide a transition between the formal landscaping of the Courtyard and the natural landscaping of the Meditation Garden. The 23 Display Gardens show some of the infinite variety, uses, and adaptations of plants native to the Hill Country. The Home Comparison Gardens illustrate that native does not mean wild or unkempt; native species can be just as attractive as non - natives. The center also has a Nature Trail through Woodland and a Wildflower Meadow.

To visit the National Wildflower Research Center, take Interstate 35 north out of San Antonio to Austin. Exit at Slaughter Ln. and go west to Loop 1. Turn left on Loop 1 and go .8 mi. and follow the signs.
